Spotlight on Schools
12th May 2025
A spotlight on Welsh lamb at NSA Welsh Sheep 2025 will feature local primary school children designing and making a meal. And it’s been hugely welcomed by the local authority.
Councillor Jake Berriman, Powys County Council's Cabinet Member for a Connected Powys, said: “This venture is a fantastic example of how we can connect our young people with the rich agricultural heritage of Powys while promoting healthy, local food.
“By involving schoolchildren in the preparation and enjoyment of Welsh lamb, we’re not only supporting our local farmers and food producers, but also helping to build a deeper understanding of where our food comes from. It’s a hands-on, memorable, experience that brings learning to life and strengthens the ties between our schools, communities, and the rural economy.”
The children will travel to the host farm near Hay on Wye from Ysgol Mynydd Du, Talgarth, and Archdeacon Griffiths School, Llyswen, There they will be split into a number of cooking sessions and be given guidance in preparing lamb meatballs.
The children will be able to choose the selection of ingredients, such as garlic, spinach, onions, chard, kale, spices. They will then be able to mark their own work out of 10.
The project is being sponsored by Castell Howell Foods, who will supply the lamb. Group ESG manager, Edward Morgan said: “This is a great opportunity to work with Powys Catering and promote the NSA event across schools in the area.
“Aligning school activities with farming and the supply chain is important, and we look forward to helping bring this event to classrooms.”
The schools will be among four local schools chosen to feature Welsh Lamb on the school menu prior to Welsh Sheep. The promotion will involve roast, boned and rolled legs of Welsh lamb served at lunch time.
NSA Welsh Sheep organizer Helen Roberts said: “This initiative is a welcome addition to the event and engages with the Next Generation, which is so important within our industry to show case the nutritious and healthy food that we produce, which is vital for a well balanced diet.”
The promotion is a joint venture between Powys County Council, NSA Welsh Sheep and Castell Howell Foods.
