Mayo Healthcare Major Sponsor NSA Welsh Sheep 2025
Hosts Use Mayo Boluses
Mayo Healthcare products are an integral part of the management strategy at the NSA Welsh Sheep Event host farm. High Country Romneys, Hay on Wye, use Mayo boluses twice a year for ewes and rams and also on young stock in the Autumn, ensuring that the flock remains healthy and productive.
The leading animal nutrition company was established in 1987 and is a Major Sponsor of NSA Welsh Sheep 2025. Mayo Healthcare partners with national and international agricultural universities to stay at the forefront of industry advancements.
The team is proud to be a part of the High Country Romney breeding plan and look forward to meeting sheep farmers at the event. Mayo trace element boluses are designed and manufactured in house to meet the nutritional and healthcare needs of modern farm animals. The products are tailored to the evolving needs of animals and farmers.
The comprehensive product range is thoughtfully designed for easy administration, reflecting Mayo's commitment to empowering farmers with the necessary tools to ensure optimal animal health. Mayo’s products are designed to proudly serve the needs of livestock farmers.
NSA event hosts, Sam and Will Sawday of High Country Romneys, run a Romney and RomTex stud, running 1,500 ewes on an all-grass, all-forage system. At High Country Romneys, the integration of New Zealand genetics is at the heart of their breeding programme.
The brothers import rams from New Zealand, so leveraging the New Zealand Maternal Index System (SIL) to record and link their stud animals, ensuring top-tier breeding stock. The aim is to breed all round performers with high lamb survival rates and strong worm resistance.
Sam explains: “I really like the ease of application. It’s very easy to put into an animal and we know that we’re low in selenium and iodine, so it’s great to have that peace of mind that the bolus is in there and it’s slowly releasing its trace elements.”
With their rigorous approach, High Country Romneys scans around 180-185%
in lambing, with high lamb survival rates. Every stud animal is recorded at birth, with lamb vigour, parenting ability, and birth weights meticulously documented. This hands-on approach provides invaluable insights into the performance of their flock.
Operating a 100% forage-fed system brings its own set of challenges, especially concerning trace elements. To counter these deficiencies, specifically in selenium, cobalt and iodine, the farm has used Mayo 4in1 and 5in1 boluses for around 5 years.
The boluses provide a slow release of essential trace elements, giving peace of mind that their sheep’s nutritional needs are being met.
